Jay Leno has been giving a detailed account of the burns he acquired on his face and body due to a fire in his garage in November.
Jay Leno Opens Up On His Garage Fire Which Left Him With Third-Degree Burns-‘My Face Caught On Fire’
The 72-year-old gave a sneak peek into an upcoming NBC News’ Today interview, as he detailed performing some tasks in his garage at the same time as his friend Dave Killackey.
In his comments, Leno said: “The fuel line was clogged so I was underneath it [car]. It sounded clogged and I said, “Blow some air through the line,” and suddenly, boom, I got a face full of gas.
“And then the pilot light jumped and my face caught on fire.” Following the accident, Leno was admitted to the Grossman Burn Center in West Hills, California, where he received treatment for third-degree burns. He then remained there for 10 days in order to recover.
His doctor Peter Grossman indicated that a type of human preserved skin was used to construct temporary skin grafts to support Leno’s healing process, and that he may need to have surgery at a later point to address the wounds.
On Monday, 21st November 2022, Leno was discharged from the healthcare center and just six days later, he was back on stage performing at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California. But things could have been different had it not been for the aid of Leno’s friend Dave.
His following comments confirmed as much: “I said to my friend, I said, “Dave, I’m on fire. And then, “Oh, my God.” Dave, my friend, pulled me out and jumped on top of me and kind of smothered the fire.”
The response on social media was one of relief. People were just glad to see Leno looking in a much better place, as who knows what could have happened on any other given day. One person wrote: “Glad you recovered J.”
