The couple downsized from the riches of the Royal Family to a $13 million house in Montecito, California, following their exit from the firm in 2020.
Despite settling in the US, the couple, who have children Archie, and Lilibet, are apparently still ‘very polarising’ in the eyes of Americans.
An insider from the area confirmed as much: “There’s no middle ground: they are either loved or loathed. Some think she is a champion for women and racial equality; others think they are money-grabbing.”
These comments arrive amid an intense sequence of never-before-seen photographs of Harry and Meghan for their $100 million Netflix docuseries.
The timing was embarrassing for Prince William and Kate Middleton– whose US trip was marred by a racism controversy after comments made by Lady Susan Hussey.
So much so that Ngozi Fulani was asked by Lady Susan where she was from, despite confirming she was British. But for all the scrutiny that may be coming William and Kate’s way, that has not made things any easier for the Sussexes.
George Wayne, who happens to be a writer based in New York, had this to say: “There is no one that I know, or care to know, who is a fan of the calculating, mousy subterfuge of Meghan.”
The social media response was much the same. A significant proportion of people felt that the couple’s actions have not done them any favours when it came to forging relationships.
After all, if they had been accused of betraying their family, it was going to be harder to develop relations with others around them.
One person wrote: “They are not popular with anyone except sugars. They have probably burnt all their bridges.” As long as Harry and Meghan are in a good place, they will not care what others have to say.
