On November 21, 2022, Oregon Department of Corrections crew was out cleaning an area off Interstate 5 when they discovered a backpack with a human skull inside. The discovery was made in Marion County and State Police took the skull to the Oregon State Medical Examiner.
Prison Cleanup Crew Discovers Human Skull Inside Backpack in Oregon Along Interstate 5
This is another case where details are sparse as there is an ongoing investigation. What police revealed is that the skull didn’t have any significant features that could tied to a missing person. Authorities only noted that the skull was “most likely that of a female in her late 30s or 40s.”
While it wouldn’t be correct to say that skulls being found on Oregon roadsides is common, this isn’t the first instance of one being found along Interstate 5. The last time authorities ran into such a discovery was in June 2018.
It wasn’t until a year and a half later when DNA testing put a name and face on the skull as Scott Evenson, a Myrtle Creek man who went missing in 2016. In Evenson’s case, his disappearance was never reported to the police.
Whether this will be an identical case or if it’s a discovery tied to something bigger might not be revealed for some time.
