The head of Qatar’s organisation for the World Cup was unfazed by the revelation of yet another migrant worker death in the nation, simply stating that death is a natural occurrence.
Qatar’s Chief Executive Of The World Cup Shows Lack Of Empathy Following Another Death Of A Migrant Worker-‘Death Is A Natural Part Of Life’
Nasser Al Khater, the chief executive in charge of the 2022 World Cup, revealed the passing of a worker at a training center, without giving any details. He extended his sympathies to the late worker’s family.
According to the people onsite, the employee was determined to be Alex, from the Philippines. It is said that he tumbled off a ramp while accompanying a forklift and stumbled into concrete.
Medical personnel went to the area, but unfortunately, they were unable to help Alex. Qatari representatives reported that they have initiated a probe into the circumstances of his passing.
In his comments, Khater said: “Death is a natural part of life, whether it’s at work, whether it’s in your sleep. We’re in the middle of a World Cup. And we have a successful World Cup.
“And this is something you want to talk about right now?” This is just one more unfortunate casualty among the numerous suspected cases of maltreatment of foreign laborers in Qatar.
It is speculated that the number of migrants who have perished while constructing the Qatar World Cup facilities could amount to as many as 6,500. Meanwhile, Qatari representative Hassan Al-Thawadi has denied the number being that high.
Instead, he referenced a figure that was much more conservative. His following comments confirmed as much: “The estimate is around 400. Between 400 and 500.
“I don’t have the precise number, that is something that is being discussed.” The response on social media was one of outrage.
A significant proportion of people bashed Khater’s comments on the grounds that it showed a lack of remorse. One person wrote: “Until it’s your own life of course.”
Clearly, more needs to be done to ensure that things like this don’t happen again. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
