In recent weeks, we’ve had some heavy speculation about the status of William Regal in AEW. He was written off TV with a violent attack from MJF, who he helped win the AEW World Heavyweight Championship during the main event of AEW Full Gear. A lot of the speculation was around the length of the AEW contract of Regal, but now Tony Khan has confirmed that Regal is leaving AEW.
Tony Khan Confirms Regal Is Leaving AEW, Had Months Of Notice
During a press conference promoting this weekends Ring of Honor PPV, Tony Khan would open with confirmation about the AEW status of William Regal. Regal had approached him before the AEW debut in Toronto and stated that he was not going to renew his AEW contract at the end of the year, wanting to return to WWE to mentor his son – Charlie Dempsey. This gave plenty of time for Khan to plan around, and Regal remains under contract until the end of the year, but is unlikely to return to TV.
Khan would confirm that all talks with Regal were very positive, and understands that Regal is simply doing what is best for his family. There is not going to be any drama with this spilt, as Regal remains one of the most professional men in the industry. His time in AEW was well spent trying to build up a faction, though an endless feud between the Blackpool Combat Club & Jericho Appreciation Society hampered those efforts.
William Regal Helped Push MJF To The Next Level
The most notable moments of the AEW run of Regal will be his segments with MJF, especially the first one which was likely the best promo segment of the year by a wide margin. It helped add an extra ripple to the character of MJF, and Regal being written off to establish that MJF is ready to go that extra mile to be a true villain was as perfect an ending to his AEW run as you can ask for.
It’s likely that Regal’s influence will carry into 2023, with many expecting Bryan Danielson to try and get revenge against MJF for the attack – leading to a huge first time match on PPV. Regal is expected to take a backstage role in WWE, but might find his way back onto TV. Will you miss William Regal in AEW? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
