The driver had valid documents for a border crossing and their manifest listed carrots. During further inspection, a drug-sniffing dog detected drugs inside a container of carrots. When agents dug into the containers, they found 628 packages of what later tested positive as meth.
The total weight of the drugs was 1,435.19 pounds with a street value of $3,013,899. Border Patrol agents handed the driver over to U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement but took custody of the drugs, vehicle, and trailer. Port Director Rosa Hernandez said of the interception:
“These types of narcotic interceptions play a critical role in our border security mission. Our officers will continue to remain vigilant working hard to detect these smuggling techniques, stopping the negative impact that narcotics have, while also preventing the proceeds from funding transnational criminal organizations.”
