Despite coming into AEW with a ton of hype, Jay Lethal has yet to claim a championship in the company. It’s not from a lack of chances, having previously challenged for the TNT & AEW World Tag Team Championships. Tonight he has another title shot as he goes one on one with AEW All-Atlantic Champion Orange Cassidy. Cassidy has managed 9 defences in 94 days, one of the most insane paces we’ve seen from a champion in AEW – and looks to keep things rolling tonight. If Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh or Sonjay Dutt get involved – Sonjay Dutt will be tired.
Reach For The Sky, Boy
The show however would start tonight in a somber manner, paying tribute to Jay Briscoe. Yesterday while driving his daughters home from cheerleading practice, they would be victims in a head on collision with another vehicle. Briscoe would lose his life in the process at just 38 years old, while both his daughters would be hospitalized following the crash. We are praying to have good news soon on that front.
As a 13 time ROH World Tag Team Champion, 2 time ROH World Champion, IWGP Tag Team Champion, NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Champions and more – the resume of Jay Briscoe is that of a true modern legend of this great sport. He will be sorely missed by anyone who ever watched him in the ring, heard him cut a promo, or shared a locker room with him. By all accounts, we just lost one of the best in the industry – and tonight’s for Jay Briscoe.
It’s Wednesday, you know what that means – it’s time to reach for the sky, boy.
Front Row Shenanigans From Unwanted Guests
Jarrett, Singh & Dutt would take their place in the front row – kicking some fans out to get a good view of the match. Cassidy would go for the Orange Punch early, but Lethal ducked and nearly got the Figure Four Leg Lock applied. This was blocked into a cradle pinfall, before Cassidy was kicked to the floor.
Jarrett would consider getting involved, but Dutt asked them to not get him fired. Danhausen came in dressed as an Usher and checked their tickets, viewing them as fraudulent and instead giving them to the rightful ticket holders – Chuck Taylor & Trent Beretta. Back in the ring, Lethal would stomp out Cassidy in the corner, as Danhausen walked into the ringside area – class changing into a manager.
Cassidy would be shoved to the floor and driven right into the apron before having his head thrown off the ring post. Lethal would keep the pressure on in the ring, hitting a scoop slam. Despite being a bastard, Lethal paid tribute to Jay Briscoe with an armband, having shared the ring with his fellow Jay in some of the best matches in ROH history.
Orange Cassidy Is Good At Punching
Lethal went to every corner of the ring to try to hit the elbow drop – as Cassidy rolled away. Cassidy would slip over the top rope, and would smash the face of Lethal into the corner before hitting the Tornado DDT for a two count. Lethal would catch the flying DDT into the Lethal Combination, but the Lethal Injection would miss.
Orange Punch would be avoided, with Lethal nailing the Lethal Injection cutter. This would have been over, but Cassidy had the wherewithal to roll out of the ring. Jarrett tried to slip Lethal the guitar, but Danhausen got it first. Back in the ring, Cassidy hit the Orange Punch – and that’s defence #10.
