The professional wrestling world is still mourning the tragic passing of Jay Briscoe. Taken at just 38 years old in a car crash, it was a sudden and hard pill to swallow. No one was more affected than his brother and career tag team partner Mark Briscoe, who tonight looks to fight in honour of his brother. Making his AEW TV debut, Mark Briscoe will face one of his brothers greatest rivals in Jay Lethal – in what might as well be the official “Jay Briscoe Memorial Match.” Lethal & Briscoe had fought wars over the ROH World Championship, and Mark looks to prove that his brother’s fighting spirit now resides within him.
Jay Briscoe Wouldn’t Want To Be Remembered With A Soft Match
Jay Lethal would bring Sonjay Dutt to the ramp, but sent him to the back – as he hit the ring wearing a Jay Briscoe shirt. He might be a villain these days, but he will not be expected to cheat in this match. It’s not about titles, it’s not about Jeff Jarrett’s ego, it’s about honouring a lost friend. Mark Briscoe would get a heroes welcome as he hit the ring, with the ROH World Tag Team Championships in hand.
Making this mean all the more – today would have been Jay Briscoes birthday. Lethal & Briscoe would lock up in the middle of the ring, with Briscoe getting a top wrist lock applied before being shoved off. He was able to snap into an arm drag, before catching Lethal with a body slam. Lethal would kick Briscoe off, leading to a stand off.
Some heavy chops would land in the corner, with Briscoe asking Lethal to bring it. Everyone grieves differently, and Jay Briscoe wouldn’t want to be remembered in a match where both men didn’t give 100%. Lethal would hit the hip toss into dropkick combination, sending Briscoe to the mat.
An early attempt at Lethal Injection was blocked with an elbow to the face, before they’d battle to the apron. Lethal would take a chop and was sent back into the ring with a lariat, only to kick Briscoe to the floor and nail the suicide dive out to the floor – sending him right into the barricade.
Mark Briscoe Nails The J-Driller
Lethal would pull Briscoe into the ring and try to end this with a pinfall, but only got a one count. Rear chinlock would be applied in the middle of the ring, with Briscoe able to remain in the fight. Briscoe would come off the top rope with some Redneck Kung Fu – before the Pele Kick in the middle of the ring.
Lethal would be put on the top rope for a big uppercut to set up the Iconoclasm for a two count. J-Driller would be set up, with Lethal able to resist the move only to take some stiff strikes to the jaw. Lethal would hit a corkscrew kick to the head before the Gordbuster setting up the Lethal Injection – with Briscoe smartly rolling to the floor.
Lethal would put Briscoe on the timekeepers table, looking for the diving elbow drop – only to be cut down. Briscoe would hit the Blockbuster off the apron, before putting Lethal on the table – and crashing through with the FroggyBow. Lethal would be rolled into the ring, but was able to kick out at 2.5.
J-Driller was again countered, with Lethal hitting a back body drop. Lethal Injection was blocked with a lariat. A second would follow, before the J-Driller would land, giving Mark Briscoe the well fought victory. Mark Briscoe would tell the fans to keep their heads up, and would send a message to his brother – that he loves him.
The AEW locker room would flood the stage – and Jay Briscoe finally got a fitting tribute on AEW TV with this match and the aftermath. What are your favourite memories of Jay Briscoe? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
