PETA, otherwise known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has condemned Dakota Johnson for participating in a new Gucci advertisement that involves her displaying handbags crafted with the skins of reptiles.
Dakota Johnson Condemned For Her Gucci Advert Promoting Reptile-Skin Products-‘How Can She Support This Company?’
Johnson featured in a new commercial which showcased her with a Jackie 1961 bag in various ordinary scenarios like going to the gym, buying flowers, and grocery shopping.
The 33-year-old star, who serves as an official representative for the high-end brand, was pictured holding items such as python and crocodile skin bags that may cost up to $52,000 each.
According to TMZ, PETA sent a letter to Johnson stating that her promotion of certain products was ‘very damaging’, and noting several of the negative aspects associated with the industry.
The letter went on to state the following: “Crocodiles killed for their skins are often kept in filthy, crowded tanks on “crocodile farms.
“Workers have been documented electroshocking crocodiles then attempting to kill them by cutting their necks and ramming metal rods down their spines.”
PETA requested the female star vow to abandon wearing and promoting articles of clothing made out of animal skin and to exchange them for vegan options.
Johnson is yet to respond to this which is understandable since it may jeopardise her relationship with the brand. Nevertheless, that did not prevent the fans on social media from making their position very clear.
A certain subset of people felt that Dakota was not coming across in a positive light since members of her family are known for being animal lovers. Meanwhile, others demanded that the products be boycotted.
One person wrote: “Please let us know which country does this so we know how to boycott their products,” while another person stated: “Her Grandmother is an animal rights activist. How can she support this company?”
