A representative for the recreational restaurant chain Dave & Buster’s confirmed that co-founder James “Buster” Corley has died. Authorities arrived at Corley’s home in Dallas, Texas on January 2, 2023, the businessman’s 72nd birthday, and found him suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dave & Buster’s Co-Founder James ‘Buster’ Corley Found Dead of Apparent Suicide at 72

Emergency services got James Corley to a hospital where he later died of his wound. It’s unknown why Corley shot himself or if there was anything in his life that may have pushed him to do so. The investigation is still very young.

When news of the incident first broke, the Dallas PD withheld Corley’s name. A spokesperson for the department told USA TODAY:

“The preliminary investigation determined when officers arrived, they found a man with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was taken to a local hospital where he died.”

Corley’s family would confirm that the man was Dave & Buster’s co-founder. His daughter Kate Corley revealed that the 72-year-old had experienced “a stroke four months ago that caused severe damage to the communication and personality part of his brain” in asking for time and peace for the family.

Dave & Buster’s first opened in 1982 with a location in Dallas and takes its name from David Corriveau and Corley’s nickname. Corriveau won a coin toss to have his name listed first in the branding. Currently, the chain has 151 locations throughout the U.S.

A spokesperson for D&B sent USA TODAY a statement following James Corley’s death:

“James W. ‘Buster’ Corley was an innovative and creative force. His pioneering spirit and steadfast belief that ‘everybody is somebody’ set the foundation for bringing food and games to millions of Dave & Buster’s guests over the past 40 years.

Our hearts go out to his family at this difficult time and while we will miss his wise counsel and his easy laugh, the legacy he and Dave [co-founder David Corriveau] built endures. “
