Dave Chappelle discussed the protesters at his stand-up performances in a fresh episode of his podcast, ‘The Midnight Miracle.’
Dave Chappelle Opens Up On His Backlash Amid Transphobic And Cancel Culture Incidents-‘They Would Ban Anything’
A dispute arose in 2021 after Chappelle released his stand-up performance “The Closer” on Netflix. His comedic remarks about transgender issues resulted in Netflix staff members walking out in objection.
This resulted in criticism of his humour which some have described as “transphobic”. And as part of that process, he commented on the First Avenue club in Minneapolis axing his gig just hours before he was due to perform, as a result of a protest.
In his comments, he said: “I guess apparently they had made a pledge to the public at large that they would make their club a safe space for all people, and that they would ban anything they deemed transphobic.
“This is a wild stance for an artistic venue to take.” In addition to this, Chappelle experienced an occurrence of violence during one of his shows at the Hollywood Bowl.
According to reports, the assailant was Isaiah Lee who was holding a replica gun, with a blade inside, as he rushed and tackled the stand-up comedian. Security personnel and other spectators quickly removed the assailant.
Subsequent to the attack, Chappelle stayed onstage, thanking the security team and then making a joke out of the episode, referring to the perpetrator as a “trans man.” And this demonstrated what Chappelle believed to be a suppression of speech.
His following comments confirmed as much: “I’m not even mad that they take issue with my work. Good, fine. Who cares? What I take issue with is the idea that because they don’t like it, I’m not allowed to say it.”
It is fair to say that Dave will continue to do what he thinks is best regardless of what others may have to say about it all. So there you have it folks. What did you think about this? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
