Over the past few years, the symbol of excellence in terms in-ring action has been in the form of GUNTHER. From his 870 days as NXT UK Champion, five star matches with Tyler Bate, Ilja Dragunov & Sheamus, to an on-going and dominant reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion? He’s been one of the best in the company, but when he originally signed with the company – he had no interest in leaving Europe for America, even if it meant a bigger role on the WWE main roster.
GUNTHER Explains Why He Didn’t Want To Leave Europe For WWE Main Roster Spot
While speaking with My San Antonio, GUNTHER would explain why he was initially against moving to the WWE main roster.
“There definitely were some even before I actually started with WWE. I had my reservations for it because was unsure if I was a fit for them and was did it really, fit to me as well. I really was enjoying building up something in Europe or in Germany. We were really building up a foundation for wrestling in the country again because it was broken down for so long.
So, I took a lot of pride in that. But obviously, time moves on and time changes. You’ve got to go with the times a little bit. Living in America was never something I was too big into. I love Europe. And I like the lifestyle in Europe. I like to be close to family and stuff. But I think I just outgrew the circumstances there and I just had to move on. I think it came to a point in my career where it was like, ‘Okay, you either make that next step now or just gonna be stagnant for the rest of it.’ And looking back, I’m glad I did it.”
It’s hard to deny that GUNTHER made the correct choice. Since joining the WWE main roster, he’s been portrayed as the same world beating monster fans saw tear through the UK indy scene and NXT UK. His matches against Sheamus in particular stand out over the past year, but GUNTHER remains someone who is seemingly incapable of having a bad match. His reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion just passed 219 days, as he put down former WWE Universal Champion Braun Strowman. Right now, he’s rumoured to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39.
