Back in 2017, fans got to see an incredible run from RAW Tag Team Champions The New Day. With the freebird rule in effect, Big E, Xavier Woods & Kofi Kingston would take on all challengers – choosing which combination best suited their opponents. This would lead to a 483 day long reign – beating the previous record set by Demolition at 478 days back in 1988. However, The Usos have since broken the record set by The New Day – and moved past 550 days recently.
Kofi Kingston Has Nothing But Respect For The Usos
While appearing on the Out of Character podcast with Ryan Satin, Kofi Kingston would have a chance to reflect upon The Uso’s surpassing The New Day’s record breaking WWE Tag Team Championship reign.
“It was something that we held dear to our hearts, especially when you think about Demolition. They held that record for what, 30 years? We’re like ‘Oh cool, we’ll have this record for at least twenty. I mean, can we get ten? Can we get a decade?’ Here are The Usos right on our tails and then they break the record less than five years later? C’mon man, we can’t have nothing around here. It’s all good man, I joke about that but The Usos are such incredible people, they’re incredible athletes, they’re incredible talent. Their journey has just been so amazing to watch when you think about the lineage and their Samoan heritage and their dad being in this and their uncles and their cousins and everybody that has come through and made their mark in the industry.”
Right now, The New Day hold the NXT Tag Team Championships, a set of belts The Usos never claimed in their WWE tenure. The Usos might now hold the record for most days as champion, but Kofi Kingston holds the record for most reigns as a tag team champion at 14 reigns – something unlikely to be broken for a long time. At the time of writing, Jimmy and Jey Uso have held the SmackDown Tag Team Championships for 557 days and the Raw Tag Team Championships for 251 days – with their SmackDown reign being the one that shattered the record.
