Last week with AEW Dynamite, fans were expecting a large tribute to the life and career of Jay Briscoe. The 38 year old has tragically passed away in a car accident the day before, with the entire professional wrestling mourning his loss. However, all that was seen on AEW Dynamite was a pre-show tribute image, some callback spots from The Young Bucks, and some Jay armbands. This was due to WarnerMedia having a ban on The Briscoe Brothers, reportedly due to the homophobic past of Jay – which he repeatedly atoned for. However, now – the ban is lifted, and Mark Briscoe will make his debut, and Jay Briscoe will be honored properly.
Mark Briscoe To Make AEW Debut Against Jay Lethal
It would be announced by Tony Khan that Mark Briscoe will be in action tomorrow night on AEW Dynamite, taking on one of his brothers greatest rivals in Jay Lethal. Khan would post the following.
Mark Briscoe vs Jay Lethal. Requested by both men to celebrate the life + legacy of the late great Jay Briscoe on his 39th birthday, his longtime friend/rival Jay Lethal vs his brother Mark Briscoe.
In addition to this, Dave Meltzer would share the following information.
AEW is also cleared to honor Jay on the show tomorrow night.
It won’t be hard to view this as the “Jay Briscoe Tribute Match”, much like Bret Hart vs. Chris Benoit on the October 4th 1999 episode of WCW Nitro is known as the “Owen Hart Tribute Match”.
Tony Khan Has Been Doing Everything Possible To Support The Family Of Jay Briscoe
Tony Khan has already been doing right by the family of Jay Briscoe even before this move. He’s been doing everything possible to support them behind the scenes, much like he did with the family of Brodie Lee following his 2020 passing.
We saw a last minute “Jay Briscoe Celebration Of Life” recorded following AEW Dynamite last week, which was promised as just the first step in honoring his life. This has yet to be aired, with interviews about Jay still being recorded to make it a more full tribute.
It’s going to be interesting seeing what AEW does to honor Jay Briscoe tomorrow on AEW Dynamite, but it’s good they are finally able to do so. WarnerMedia got a lot of backlash for blocking any tributes, and stepping back was absolutely the correct move in this situation.
