When it comes to iconic commentary teams in professional wrestling, one of the first that comes to mind was the WWE power duo of Jim Ross & Jerry “The King” Lawler. For many years, they were the default voice of WWE – providing commentary for some of the biggest moments in the companies history. However, some comments made by Lawler have not exactly aged well – especially when it comes to the women’s division. Despite this, WWE Hall of Famer Molly Holly just saw it as Lawler doing his job.
Molly Holly Never Took It Personal With Jerry Lawler
While appearing on Highspot Sign It Live, Molly Holly would be asked if she ever had an issue with the commentary style of Jerry Lawler. Holly would have the following to say.
“I have always liked Jerry and I knew that he had a job to do and he did his job well. I didn’t particularly care of the things he said, but I never held that against him personally. His job was to entertain the demographic that was watching the show and at the time, that was all culturally acceptable and funny. No problems with it even though I would have rather they talk about my athleticism. It was what it was for the time,”
Speaking On Her Role As A WWE Producer
During this same session, Holly would have a chance to speak about her job as a WWE producer – and how she tries to view things from the eyes of a casual fan.
“I am what’s called a producer, back in the day they called them an agent. It’s an honor for me because Dean Malenko was a mentor to me and he was an agent for so many years, and Fit Finlay, who I love, and to be in the same role that they were for me is really special to be able to help the young talent be encouraged on a rough day or to help them just have the best role possible.
I do look at it like I’m the eyes of the casual fan. I’m the person who flips through every now and again to watch. Whenever I’m helping with the show, I try to say, ‘Okay, we don’t want to just cater to the pocket of people who are superfans and devote every week. If someone is flipping through the channels, maybe for the first time, we want to capture their attention and make them lifelong fans if it’s their first time seeing the show. That’s something I think I bring from the casual fan perspective.”
