Criticism has been directed towards social media companies for allowing the propagation of misinformation by Andrew Tate’s supporters after he was apprehended in relation to an inquiry into human trafficking.
Social Media Companies Slammed For Allegedly Promoting Misinformation About The Disgraced Andrew Tate
Following his apprehension, numerous posts on TikTok and Twitter inaccurately declared his release and alleged that he had been framed.
Tate, aged 36, and his sibling Tristan Tate were apprehended by Romanian authorities while they were looking into accusations of human trafficking, rape, and involvement in organised crime.
In August, a study conducted by the Observer uncovered that TikTok was actively pushing content from Tate to young men.
Those who enrolled in Tate’s online academy were allegedly given instructions to post videos that were intentionally contentious in order to provoke interaction and manipulate the algorithm.
Imran Ahmed, who is the head of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, had this to say: “Having conspiracy theories proliferating which might put at risk the integrity of an investigation or the safety of those involved is unconscionable.”
Prosecutors declared that four individuals were believed to be a part of a criminal organization that manipulated women by providing false promises of a relationship and then exploited them sexually.
It is claimed that the women were exposed to both physical and psychological abuse including intimidation, monitoring and control. It was then confirmed that Tate was to be held in custody for the upcoming month while the investigation continued.
The response on social media was one of outrage. A certain subset of people were of the view that things had been blown out of proportion to the point where Tate’s content had become ad nauseam.
One person wrote: “Some of the comments on here, what sad lives people live, Andrew Tate is a nobody! Have a cup o[f] tea, watch TV, get a job, speak to family or friends, try to enjoy life ffs, you sad lot.”
