New year, new NXT. It may be for the best. NXT 2.0 is behind us and I think that it is for the best. Going into the new year, there should be a new focus for the company and hopefully a new focus that will stabilize the brand not only for the next year, but for many years to come.
More of a Focus on the Tag Team Division
There are many things that defined the prime days of NXT and one of those things was the resurgence of tag team wrestling. This division shed light on many great tag teams like DIY, FTR (now in AEW), and American Alpha.
Since those times, the NXT tag team scene has been very stagnant. It seemed like the champions were chosen based on who was there rather than who put in the work to have it.
There was a time when there were only two or three teams on the brand and they had to put the titles on one of them.
Whether NXT put two wrestlers that they aren’t using together as a team or bring some new teams into the company from the outside, I think that the people in charge of NXT will make more of an effort to push tag team wrestling forward in the company.
Stop Putting Talent on Television Early
This is part of the reason why the quality of NXT took a nosedive in 2022. Vince wanted his guys and gals to be showcased. He gave them time before they were ready because he wanted them to develop rapidly.
This was a big mistake because most of the time, they came across poorly on television and unluckily for them, they got blamed for doing bad.
This has an effect on the confidence of young wrestlers, and for wrestlers that are probably young and didn’t want to be a wrestler in the first place, they might leave.
With Triple H and Shawn making the call, I think that they will give the new people time and space to develop off air before putting them on air to get critiqued by people like me.
Stop With Stupid Gimmicks
I am a firm believer that every wrestler should be packaged with a gimmick and that they should know what that is and be able to work within that gimmick.
When Vince was in control of NXT, we saw many gimmicks that we could say very quickly that this is stupid.
In my opinion, if you don’t want a wrestler in the company, just release them. You don’t have to make them suffer by forcing them to work a dead end gimmick.
I don’t think that gimmicks should just be a wrestler being themselves, but it can be something that closely resembles real life.
Also, I think that the wrestler themselves should have a say so in what character they play on television. This could be a gift and a curse.
A wrestler may choose a safe gimmick to work and be sure that they can work it, but those gimmicks are most likely already taken by better options. There is a fine line that needs to be walked because of this.
