Recently, fans of All Elite Wrestling got to welcome Adam Cole back into the mix. Cole was taken off TV due to a concussion suffered during a Fatal Four Way match for the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door – an injury Cole didn’t know if he could come back from. However, the long road to recovery was all worth it when his music hit, and announced the bad news for the AEW roster – that he was coming back and better than ever before. This set Cole down a path to being a babyface for one of the first times in his career.
Adam Cole Stepped Out Of His Comfort Zone As He Turned Babyface
While speaking with Dave Meltzer and Garrett Gonzales on Wrestling Observer Radio, Cole would reflect on being nervous to make his return as a babyface – as it meant stepping out of his comfort zone in professional wrestling.
“In this particular situation, if I would have come through with a different approach of cutting a heel promo or acting like a heel right from the return, we would have been fighting upstream. It was one of those things where, of course, the fans were going to be excited and be behind you, especially when they hear the story. In that sense, that process has been easier. In general, I have been a heel for 95% of my entire career.
I’ve talked like a heel and wrestled like a heel for a really long time. To even step outside of that comfort zone and talk, like I feel, as a babyface would, it was very mentally intimidating for me. Fortunately, the process of the real journey and real story makes it easy because it’s all real. It’s all things that I actually feel. The entire recovery process was all real. At this point, whether it’s heel or babyface, I’m just worried about telling my story and I’m glad the fans have my back on this one.”
AEW Needs Strong Babyfaces
Between the likeability of Cole and his excellent in-ring work, it won’t be hard for AEW to push him as potentially one of the top babyfaces on the roster. With MJF projected to reign as AEW World Champion into 2024, strong challengers will be needed – and Cole vs. MJF is a potential PPV main event for AEW in 2023.
