AEW star Eddie Kingston gets a thumbs up from FTR member Dax Harwood and draws comparisons to “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. On the FTR podcast, Harwood touched on several things—in-ring and out—that get Kingston high marks in his books.
Dax Harwood Believes Eddie Kingston is the Dusty Rhodes of AEW
Harwood touched on Kingston—who has had his own troubles in life and in his career—being there for him while he was dealing with his mental health. He also said that he felt that Eddie Kingston was extremely similar to Dusty Rhodes as a performer who can make fans believe and cheer for the most seemingly unlikely of heroes.
“I think Eddie is our version of Dusty Rhodes. The common man who can talk better than anybody else in the business, and make people feel a certain way. Doesn’t matter what situations he is put in, he still makes the people feel a certain way about what he’s doing. That is a very rare commodity, quality, in your arsenal. He makes people care because what he says, he believes. When he fights, he believes that too.” -Dax Harwood (h/t 411mania)
It’s definitely an interesting but not exactly unique take. Kingston has that “common man” appeal to him in that he says what is on his mind based on the situation. When he speaks on the mic, there’s an authenticity to his mic work where it sounds more like the sound system has been hijacked than the lengthy speeches we normally hear on prime time wrestling.
However, there are two important elements to Eddie Kingston where the parallels are obvious. Going back to the common man appeal; Kingston resembles those he fights for to some degree—fans—as a face. Even as a heel when he fights for himself, it’s still relatable because the everyday person works for themselves and their folks.
It all comes down to believability which means the suspension of disbelief doesn’t have to be as great. Another thing that bolsters that comparison is that like Dusty Rhodes, Eddie fights with passion. It’s not going to be the prettiest or crispest thing you’ve seen. If he’s involved in a feud, you’re not getting an exchange of holds from Kingston but you’re going to see an exchange of fists—and even on that front, there’s still a reliability aspect.
What do you think? Do you see the comparisons between Dusty Rhodes and Eddie Kingston or is it a stretch? What wrestler from the past would you compare him to? Share your thoughts in the comments!
