Former WWE superstar and Fox News pundit Tyrus doesn’t mind the notoriety of his NWA World Championship reign or that fans feel he sucks. On the Ten Count podcast with Steven Fall, Tyrus went into the backlash he and the NWA have experienced as a result of him being the champion.
Former WWE Superstar and NWA World Champion Tyrus Thrives Off the Fans’ Negativity
Tyrus has been a divisive figure among wrestling fans when he’s brought up. That’s the important thing to note: while fans aren’t with this reign for the most part, people are talking about him and his wrestling endeavors.
That’s a difference from when Tyrus was brought up mainly because of statements on Fox News that ruffled feathers or allegations of sexual harassment. Prior to that, he was viewed as either a functional but basic wrestler not of note, his wrestling just wasn’t discussed, or everyone just sh** on his ability and gimmick.
There was very little love for his in-ring ability or the potential he had. On the show, Tyrus summed it up by going into wrestlers who were said to have sucked. Name-dropped were John Cena, Kurt Angle, CM Punk, and so on—fellow World champions and WWE alumni.
Of course, the difference with each of those varied. Cena went from pretty basic to a great big-match player who was over-used to the point that we all kind of knew how a feud was going to end. The Rock sucked because no one cared for the Rocky Maivia gimmick at that point in the 90s and he was just roasted for it by the fans.
However, The Rock ended up becoming a big match player in his 20s and was one of the main events that helped solidify the main event brawl approach to WWE’s PLEs. And Kurt Angle? C’mon.
Ultimately, it would be a piece of advice Kevin Nash shared that is part of Tyrus’ approach to wrestling and dealing with fans: “Is the check clearing? Then you’re welcome.” At the end of the day, that’s the immediate concern while the legacy is something you look back on from a position of comfort—gained from the checks clearing.
