In a story out of Des Moines, Iowa, a man who faked his death to avoid child porn charges was sentenced to 20 years behind bars. Jacob Greer (27) had been investigated by Homeland Security in 2014. In February 2015, a search warrant was executed on Greer’s residence and seized several devices loaded with child pornography.

He was arrested but released on bond the next day. Greer was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor and actually kept to wearing it. That is until time crept closer to a court date on the charges. In May 2016, authorities noticed that the ankle monitor hadn’t moved for a while.
A check of his grandmother’s home turned up nothing but they found the GPS monitor. In their search for Greer, they found his truck and a suicide note inside but the suspect couldn’t be located. The initial theory was that he’d fled Iowa after he was spotted in a Montana Walmart buying $1,000 in survival gear and supplies.
The sighting occurred in early June 2016. According to authorities, Jacob Greer planned “to live off the land in remote areas of the upper western states or southern Canada, hiding out in abandoned cabins.”
Greer’s flight from justice ended in April 2022 when the U.S Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force sniffed him out and arrested him on Spanaway, Washington state. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and will have to pay $12,000 to the victims filmed or photographed in the material he collected and possibly traded.
In addition to time and restitution, Jacob Greer will also have to register as a sex offender. U.S Attorney Richard D. Westphal said of the sentence:
“Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our law enforcement partners, including the United States Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force, sex offender Jacob Greer failed in his attempt to avoid accountability for these serious charges involving the exploitation of children.”
