Rapper NBA YoungBoy has revealed that he has some regrets about the music he’s written in the past and remorse about the content of those tunes. In an interview with Billboard, he said that he was converting to Mormonism and his new belief will be reflected in future material.
NBA YoungBoy Converting to Mormonism and Distances Himself from His Past Music
After various legal issues in a relatively short period of time, the 23-year-old Louisiana rapper settled in Salt Lake City, Utah and seems to have found peace there. He married his long-time girlfriend Jazlyn Hayes at the start of 2023 and despite being restricted and monitored, he’s gotten to learn about the Utah-born religion via visitors from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
He admitted that he sent the missionaries away when they first came to his home in late 2022. However, feeling that he wasn’t in the best place or something was missing, he welcomed them in and listened.
During the interview, he quips that it was odd that the missionaries hadn’t shown up with the cameras and visitors. As it turned out, they actually showed up but were turned away because of visitor limits.
YoungBoy expressed his plans to get baptized in the church and acknowledged that the new approach to life could influence his music. On that note, he told Billboard’s Meaghan Garvey:
“It took lots of time to make my music strong enough to get it to where I could captivate you. I promise to clean whatever I can clean, but it’s going to take time, just like it took time for me to get it to that point. I was wrong. And I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
The approach is already starting in earnest. In 2022, NBA YoungBoy—known for his high volume/high consistency releases—dropped four solo mixtapes, two collaborative mixtapes, and a full-length album The Last Slimeto. Roughly five months after The Last Slimeto, he released his Motown Records debut I Rest My Case in January 2023.
