After serving eight years of his 16-year sentence for sexually abusing three girls, 70s glam rock pioneer Gary Glitter was released from HMP The Verne. As expected, his release hasn’t gone over well at all and a group of protesters gathered at the bail hostel where Glitter was being housed.

Police were notified of a “public order event” just after 3:30 PM. A spokeswoman with the Hampshire Constabulary said that officers were there to keep order and it was resolved without arrests. The one incident of note involved a protester trying to climb a fence on the property.
Voices have been loudly against Glitter’s release which happened automatically half way through the sentence. There’s a belief in that by not serving his full sentence, Glitter is escaping the full consequences of his actions—which have seen him behind bars in the past.
The three charges he was sentenced for in 2015 all occurred during the height of his fame in the 70s and 80s following hits such as “Do You Wanna Touch Me?” and “Rock and Roll Part 2”.
Two victims who were 12 and 13 at the time were attacked by Glitter backstage after getting them away from their mothers. The youngest victim was less than 10-years-old. Glitter attempted to rape her after slipping into her bed in 1975.
The allegations were revisited following disgraced TV presenter and DJ Jimmy Saville’s death and investigations into the deceased’s allegations. As a result, Gary Glitter became the first arrest of the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Yewtree.
The Ministry of Justice explained Glitter’s release saying that he would be monitored:
“Sex offenders like Paul Gadd (Gary Glitter) are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest licence conditions, including being fitted with a GPS tag. If the offender breaches these conditions at any point, they can go back behind bars.”
