I think that at the very least, WWE Smackdown has two of the top three heels in wrestling on their brand. While there are many other great heels out there, the ones on Smackdown are great in different ways. Here are the top heels on Smackdown.
GUNTHER
The Intercontinental Champion has been a constant force on Friday nights for closing in on a year. He is one of the best booked and most protected heels in wrestling.
While there is a heel over him, I think that if you wanted the blueprint for how to build a dominate heel in any company, you should look at what WWE has done with GUNTHER over his IC run.
He has won almost every match that he has been in, he is surrounded by a group that is willing to do his dirty work for him and look to him as the biggest thing in the world, and don’t make him look stupid or scared during matches.
Also, he will very soon, help his fellow Imperium groupmates become more established in the tag team division.
I think that GUNTHER has a bright future and this year will be the year of GUNTHER.
The Viking Raiders (Erik and Ivar)
A group that has missed a big part of the last six months returned and made a big splash. This spot should have been reserved for the Usos, but with developments in the storyline, I think that there is a strange face/heel thing going on there.
That being said, the tag team that is involved in a storyline with the top babyface tag team on the brand (Sheamus and Drew McIntyre), the Viking Raiders has to be on this list.
They have all of the makings for a top heel tag team but I don’t think that they have been around long enough for me to for sure say that they are going to be in the best position three to four months down the road.
At the moment, they have been booked to perfection. My only reservation for them is that they are one of the only acts in the company with an unrealistic gimmick. While I like it, I think that presenting it to a larger audience on a consistent basis will eventually go extremely well or extremely bad.
Roman Reigns
The top wrestler in the world is also the top heel in the world. He has been in this position for going on three years. I think that he will be in this position for probably another year down the road.
While GUNTHER is the blueprint for how to build a top heel, I think that Roman Reigns is the ideal picture of who the top heel in a company should be. While people might not like his in ring work, the top wrestlers in the most successful companies in history has typically not been the best wrestlers.
Roman has so many of the things that make a top star. The look, the build, the height, the methodical in ring style, the charisma, the mic skills, the dominate group around him, and championship.
While many fans are tired of him being champion, it has been proven that he is the top heel in the business and no matter how much you want to complain about him, you are lying if you can’t realize that whenever Roman DOES show up, he is one of the few wrestlers today that actually seem like a big deal.
