It’s been a long time since AEW fans have got to see Kenny Omega enter a singles match on Dynamite. This came on the episode of Dynamite before Full Gear 2021, when Omega – still the AEW World Champion at that point – faced Alex Angels.
Since then, Omega has become a two time AEW World Trios Champion, and won the IWGP United States Championship at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17.
Tonight, we get a match that was intended for December 2021 as well, as Omega takes on lucha libre prodigy – El Hijo Del Vikingo.
This is an international dream match two years in the making. It’s the AAA Mega Champion vs. the IWGP United States Champion. The Son of the Viking vs. The Best Bout Machine.
El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Kenny Omega is finally happening, and on AEW TV. Earlier in the night, The Young Bucks were taken to the hospital after an attack, which Don Callis called a blessing – as Omega can now focus on being The God of Pro Wrestling once again.
El Hijo del Vikingo Shows His Insane Speed Early
Vikingo would make an immediate impact, diving over the top rope onto Omega before he even hit the ring.
Omega would gain control in the ring as the bell rang, before taking the Imploding Hurricanrana in the corner, before being sent to the floor with a stiff double knee smash. Vikingo would come off the apron with a Shooting Star Press, before a 450 Splash in the ring for a two count.
Omega would look to stop the speed of Vikingo with some heavy punches in the corner before spiking him with a massive backbreaker.
Vikingo would be kicked out to the floor, with Omega grabbing and setting up a table at ringside. Back in the ring, Vikingo would have his braid yanked by Omega, who was showing some clear aggression tonight.
Omega would try for a pinfall, Vikingo able to kick out – only to be physically overwhelmed. Slowing the pace against a luchador is always a good idea, and has worked for Omega against the likes of Rey Fenix.
Vikingo would take several punches on the ropes, before pulling out a fast hurricanrana.
Omega was sent to the apron and would brawl with Vikingo before hitting a Monkey Flip. He’d eye the table he set up earlier in the match, and wanted the Snap Dragon Suplex through the table. Vikingo would avoid this, climb onto the top of the ring post and jump off with a Dragonrana to the floor.
A Five Star Performance In Any Arena
Omega would be stunned in the ring, and set up on the top rope. Vikingo would be at risk of a powerbomb off the top rope as Omega recovered, but was able to counter into a hurricanrana. Omega landed head first before Vikingo sprung over the ropes into a Phoenix Splash for a 2.9 count.
Vikingo would go for a springboard splash, but was caught into a powerbomb before taking a V-Trigger to the face. Omega would set up Vikingo by the ropes for another V-Trigger, and Vikingo was looking like dead weight.
One Winged Angel was set up, but Vikingo fought free and hit the Swan Dive Poisonrana to send Omega to the table. He would proceed to put him through it with a springboard 630 senton.
Vikingo had some issues putting Omega into the ring, getting a two count due to the delay. They’d trade blows in the middle of the ring – with Omega nailing the V-Trigger but taking a Sunset Flip Bomb in response.
Another 630 Senton was avoided, with Vikingo bouncing off the canvas before the V-Trigger and One Winged Angel for the finish.
Hangman Page Saves Kenny Omega
After the match, Omega would be asked how he was feeling – and he’d question how much longer he can do this. Blackpool Combat Club members Wheeler Yuta, Claudio Castagnoli & Jon Moxley would attack – before Hangman Page rolled back up to the arena with a nail filed 2×4.
Hangman Page would hit the ring armed for combat, to save his former tag team partner and friend.
Moxley would have Blackpool Combat Club retreat – as Don Callis would check on Omega. Page is a rival of Omega’s, and Callis would take a bump – trying to blame Page for it. Omega didn’t know what to think, scoffing at the help of Page as this show came to an end.
