On October 4th, 2019 – the first and to date only WWE Championship reign of Kofi Kingston came to a sudden end. He was set to defend the belt against Brock Lesnar on the first episode of Smackdown Live on Fox, and the match ended in seconds after a single F5. This was a major blow to many WWE fans and people in the locker room, including Bryan Danielson – the man Kingston beat to start his reign.
Bryan Danielson Calls His WrestleMania 35 Match With Kofi Kingston “His Favorite Match”
While speaking with Cameron Hawkins of The Ringer, Danielson would reflect on his loss to Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35 – and Kingston’s loss to Brock Lesnar. Danielson would have the following to say about the highs and lows of 2019.
“To me, the whole thing, KofiMania was magic. And you look at the live events, like the number of shows that he did for WWE, the amount of TV time that he Kingston filled in every time, going out there and always having a positive attitude and all that kind of stuff. What a great human being, you know what I mean? Like I said, it was my favorite match. I think the whole thing was my favorite part of my WWE career. And conversely, the most demoralized I ever was was seeing him lose it to Brock Lesnar the way that he did.”
The Losing To Brock Lesnar Part Was Not The Issue
Many will agree that it was not Kofi losing to Lesnar that was the issue – it was how short the match was. The match only lasted seven seconds, which was even faster than Diesel beating Bob Backlund for the WWF Championship in 1994. There is no doubt that Kingston & Lesnar could have had a great short match, but instead WWE went for the ‘making a moment’ approach – leading to many disgruntled fans in the process.
Add in that Kingston has never even approached the main event since, and it was just a clear message sent to the WWE locker room. There was likely many more left feeling like Danielson after this match, certainly causing more harm than good in the long term.
