For the past 900 days, Roman Reigns has been the top dog in WWE. Challengers have come and gone, with Reigns taking down the likes of Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre, Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Edge, Daniel Bryan & more.
However, his most recent title defence was one of his best – taking on Sami Zayn in front of a red hot crowd in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This was the payoff to months of Zayn running alongside Reigns & The Bloodline – and no one else could have filled this role but Zayn.
Sami Zayn Was The Only Man Who Could Be The Honorary Uce, Says Roman Reigns
While speaking with ESPN before WrestleMania 39, Reigns would take a chance to praise Sami Zayn – who was key in keeping fans engaged with The Bloodline in 2022. Simply put – no one could have done the Honorary Uce role except Sami Zayn.
“I was entertained by him when he did the Jackass stuff and really respected the way he navigated that creative process. I believe I can do work of this level with… other guys, they’d just be different. It wouldn’t be the same. It would be a different character, a different angle, a different layer. Nobody would be able to be the ‘Honorary Uce’ other than Sami Zayn. He’s endearing in that way where you want something good for him. Even if he doesn’t deserve it, you still want it for him.”
Zayn’s storyline with The Bloodline took a turn at the 2023 Royal Rumble, when he turned on Reigns in favour of Kevin Owens.
Reigns would defeat Zayn at Elimination Chamber with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on the line. Zayn will team with Owens to face The Usos for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania 39.
Meanwhile, Roman Reigns is set to be in the main event of WrestleMania for the third year in a row. He will defend against Cody Rhodes, who won the 2023 Royal Rumble match – with many feeling this will finally be the end of this huge reign.
