By this time, it should be no surprise that Brock Lesnar versus Gunther wasn’t in the cards for WrestleMania 39. As a matter of fact, Triple H wasn’t even booking in that direction for either superstar. Their confrontation during the Men’s Royal Rumble was one of those moments that was just going to happen—similar to two giants squaring off after airing out the ring.
WrestleMania Plans for Brock Lesnar and Gunther Never Included a 1-on-1 Match at the Year’s Biggest Event
If anything, it was foreshadowing to what could happen later in the year. It was also a little bait for fans who really want WWE to shotgun this match at WrestleMania 39. With those two squaring off, fans would anticipate the match since there was enough time to build up for it.
Instead, Gunther—who expressed that now wasn’t the moment to face Lesnar—will defend his Intercontinental title against former WWE Champions Drew McIntyre or Sheamus. A barn-burning monster battle to be sure. As for Brock Lesnar, he’ll take on Omos after sidestepping a collision course with Bray Wyatt.
The important thing to consider is that WWE typically plans months in advance leading into their big events and WrestleMania. This isn’t on-the-fly unless someone is injured or suspended. Even then, there is usually a plan B that WWE can live with creatively.
For Gunther who is being built up steadily and with impressive opponents, WWE has been working on his Road to WrestleMania since December 2022. Everything was in place to the point where when Lesnar-Gunther looked like a possibility for WM39, the road to that match had already been demolished. It just wasn’t going to happen.
Of course, it was taken out of the plans for WrestleMania. That doesn’t mean we would see these two face off at all this year. With that said, at which of the major events do you see Gunther facing Brock Lesnar?
