There’s plenty of speculation happening online right now at a possible brand split within AEW, and given their bloated roster size it may not be a bad idea.
It’s something the WWE started when their roster expanded with the addition of ECW and WCW talent following the Monday Night Wars, and they’ve continued it with varied success since.
Could AEW’s Brand Split Be Team CM Punk vs. Team Elite?
AEW has become just as bloated as the WWE used to be with the addition of Ring of Honor and a majority of former WWE talent that was released or didn’t renew their contracts with the company.
One of the main complaints among fans are their inability to watch their favorites regularly, and part of that is due to the large roster.
It’s been reported that Tony Kahn uses a rotation of his talent, which explains why we won’t see some for a few weeks as he wants to keep different faces fresh.
But the talk of a brand split has taken a curious twist with the reports the CM Punk would like to come back to wrestling.
Us vs. them
While any news of Punk returning should be taken with a grain of salt until Kahn makes a “huge announcement” or Punk arrives on AEW television, one theory offers a interesting idea.
For starters, the brand split would mean a possible Saturday show added to their lineup, and that would then become the home of Punk and those that like him and want to work with him.
The other brand would be those that, well, don’t like or don’t want to work with Punk, which could mean the Elite.
It’d be a curious experiment as one show would have the high spot video game type of wrestling AEW has taken its fair share of grief over, while the other would be a slower, more mat based style Punk, FTR, and others prefer.
Basically, flash and dash versus grind it out or whatever monikers you’d like to call them.
While this wouldn’t heal the wounds caused by the different personalities, it would make each show a different flavor and, hopefully, a different booking style.
When the WWE started their brand split it was pretty cool as each show handled it differently. Raw was more of a diverse storytelling show while Smackdown had more of the top flight talent and relied on them to carry it.
Of course, this also opens the pandora’s box about different titles and will AEW have two world titles, two tag titles, etc or keep the singular titles and have the champions float, like the WWE originally did and many of us would like to see happen again following their draft.
