Whelp, the bottom falling out was bound to happen after the WWE had a phenomenal night one of WrestleMania 39, and it did just that on night two.
Granted, it wasn’t a total flop, but it’ll be remembered for the wash, rinse, repeat title defense for Reigns and the missed opportunity the WWE had.
Triple H Uses a Word Salad to Explain Why WWE Dropped the Ball with Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania Loss
We’ve seen the Bloodline save Reigns’ title though numerous ways of interfering, including a tractor, and it’s beyond old.
We were teased something fresh with Cody Rhodes coming in and looking to fulfill his dream and it didn’t matter it was the same promo every week because he poured so much of himself into it.
Just like with Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle, the build up was perfect for the win and to have an enormous pop and special moment.
But neither moment happened because someone wants Reigns to set records. It doesn’t matter that the Bloodline is tired or if it would be the right thing to put Reigns in a position to prove himself by going back after the title.
Afterall, Hulk Hogan had to win back the WCW World Heavyweight Championship a couple of times when he was with the nWo, and that made it all the more special because he could lose it under the right circumstances.
But now the WWE has to build up for the right circumstances a third time.
Ongoing story?
To explain the decision to have Reigns retain, Triple H talked about it at WrestleMania 39’s press conference.
“It’s always interesting to me when people say ‘how could that happen?’, or ‘how could they do that?’ in that moment. And it’s almost perfectly spelled out in the story, ‘I need to finish the story.’ In the WWE, the story never finishes. Tomorrow night on Raw — it’s sold out, Crypto Arena —- the story continues, the story takes another chapter. We just got the end of a chapter, but the story continues and that’s where this gets interesting to me. I think that is what’s the most amazing thing about our business, the story never ends.”
In other words, it’s about when he, or most likely Vince McMahon, thinks the story should end.
After years of having Reigns shoved down our throats as a babyface, he had a breakthrough as the Tribal Chief, but now he’s being shoved down a throats again as every match is beyond predictable.
There’s the thought that this builds heat for Reigns as the heel, but in actuality it’s heat building toward the company for forcing more of he same results we’ve seen for months on us when fans are ready for a change.
Sure, Cody may win the title another day, but it won’t have the same feel as it would’ve at WrestleMania. Instead of a “Wow! That’s awesome!” it’ll be more of a “Gee, we waited for this?”
Typical WWE playing it safe. Especially with the sale being announced and McMahon being kept in power.
