Last night at AEW Double Or Nothing 2023, fans got to see the Four Pillars of AEW in the spotlight. MJF would defend the AEW World Championship against Jack Perry, Darby Allin & Sammy Guevara in a thrilling Fatal Four Way match. You can read a full breakdown of that match and it’s events here.
However, after the dust settled and MJF took his seat next to Tony Khan for the post show media scrum – MJF would let his true feelings show. Simply put, he’s bored with professional wrestling.
“I’ve Had One Of The Best Professional Wrestling Runs In The History Of The Business”
MJF would have the following to say about his time in professional wrestling – and how he’s already had a Hall of Fame level career.
“I’m dead serious. If I literally retire today, this is not hyperbole, I’ve had one of the best professional wrestling runs in the history of the business, that’s a fact. Best oratory exhibitions, best Iron Man match, best singles dog collar match, tonight I had the best four-way. Also, some of the best rivalries in the history of the sport; Cody Rhodes, Wardlow, CM Punk, Danielson, and that’s just to name a few.
I’m pretty sure if I called it quits, I’ve had a Hall of Fame career, which is why, quite frankly, when I say ‘take my ball and go home,’ earmuffs Tony, everybody thinks I’m talking about WWE. Now, does Nick Khan want me to work in his company? Sure. Does Triple H want me to work in his company? Sure. Calm down, it’s fine, or maybe it’s not, but I’m kind of bored of this sport and I’m bored of the lack of respect from professional wrestling fans, so when I say ‘take my ball and go home,’ I mean literally, just hang it up, and fuck up the lineage of this title.
Frankly, I don’t know if anybody is worthy of beating me for this thing. Now, I’m not just going to hand it away, why would I do that? I earned this thing. Please, by all means, take it off of me, somebody put me out of my misery. Until then, we’ll see what happens,”
AEW Gives MJF The Chance To Truly Be Himself In Professional Wrestling
Right now, MJF is contracted to AEW until 2024. That is when his initial five year contract will expire, having signed with the company in 2019. He’s been using ‘the bidding war of 2024’ and references to Nick Khan & Triple H as an easy way to draw heat with the fanbase of AEW for a while now.
Despite this, it’s likely that MJF is going to stick around in AEW. The level of creative freedom and his top star role in AEW is not something he’s certain to find in WWE. MJF would undoubtedly find a strong role on the WWE roster, but part of his charm in AEW is that he’s a homegrown star – and can be the exact professional wrestler he wants to be.
