Since 2019, All Elite Wrestling has given professional wrestling fans another weekly TV option. For many years, WWE was the only major name in North America, with Impact Wrestling & Ring of Honor finding limited reach on TV.
However since the fall of 2019, viewers have found AEW Dynamite on TBS & TNT – major networks that allowed them to truly compete with WWE. As they add a new show to their lineup – there are some concerns about the appeal of AEW to warrant another two hour show, namely that they don’t appeal to more casual fans.
Matt Hardy Hopes AEW Finds A Way To Grow It’s Audience
One name within AEW who has recently brought this up is Matt Hardy. Having signed with the AEW in 2020, Hardy is one of the more instantly recognizable names in the company due to his many years within WWE. Having spent many years in the industry, Hardy knows that you need to appeal to as many markets as possible, and hopes AEW finds a way to get in front of more casual fans.
While speaking on The Extreme Life Of Matt Hardy podcast, Hardy would hope that with Collision – they will find a way to bring in some casual fans. Hardy was quoted saying the following.
“That’s a positive for AEW without a doubt that the Turner folks are all about the pro wrestling hardcore fanbase. The hardcore fanbase, they’re going to tune in each and every week, even if they complain about the show… I’m a big advocate after being around for 31 years, to grow the fanbase of AEW, I do think we need to appeal to some more casual fans who might not be all about just the wrestling and the five-star matches.”
WarnerMedia has stated that they are fine with AEW mainly drawing in hardcore fans – as they are reliably tuning in each and every week. With All In this August being AEW’s biggest show to date – it’s their best chance to grow their audience. AEW has already sold over 70,000 tickets, with the show likely to be shown on the new MAX streaming service, giving a wide reach.
