All Elite Wrestling are prepared to once again honor a legend of professional wrestling, that being Owen Hart. Since his tragic passing due to an entrance gone wrong in 1998, Owen has been mourned by fans – who viewed him as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.
Last year, we saw the inaugural Owen Hart Cup Tournament, which was won by Adam Cole & Britt Baker. Now, 2023 is set to be even bigger – and Tony Khan hopes to bring in one of Hart’s best opponents.
Tony Khan Wants Jushin Liger On Hand For Owen Hart Cup
While speaking at the Double Or Nothing post-show media scrum, Tony Khan would mention a potential plan for the Owen Hart Cup Tournament – wanting to bring in Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. Khan had the following say.
“I’m not sure about this, I’ve had some nice talks, I’m hopeful and I spoke to New Japan Pro-Wrestling, I think it would be great and they think it would great. One of Owen Hart’s great opponents, a rival, they’ve competed, both former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champions, wouldn’t it be amazing if we could get Jushin Thunder Liger over to Canada. He’s competed against Owen Hart and competed in Canada and competed in Stampede Wrestling. That would be something really neat. To coincide with AEW in Canada and Forbidden Door door and our partnership with New Japan, and most importantly the Owen Hart Cup tournament, I think it would be great if Jushin Thunder Liger can come over. I’m optimistic that he’ll be able to.”
The tournament will kick off at Forbidden Door, and end at the Calgary Stampede – giving a very Canadian flair of the tournament. Liger will not be involved in any matches, having retired in 2020.
He’s often spotted on commentary for New Japan Pro Wrestling, still wearing his iconic mask. Liger & Owen had their most famous match in the 1991 Top Of The Super Junior tournament, often considered one of the best matches of both men’s career.
