Since arriving in NXT UK, there has been one man on the WWE roster who is perhaps more feared than anyone. This is Gunther, originally known to WWE fans as WALTER.
Between his 1000+ day reign as NXT UK Champion which included numerous five star matches and his current run as WWE Intercontinental Champion, he’s shown the ability to thrive in WWE without watering down his violent in-ring style. He’s someone that very few men have figured out, and that’s because he’s almost a flawless wrestler.
Gunther Is A Man Without Weaknesses In His Game
While speaking with Ariel Helwani – current WWE commentator and former leader of The Nexus Wade Barrett would speak about The Ring General – and details why he’s so good.
“Gunther is a complete phenom, to be honest with you. I think if he didn’t have the WWE Intercontinental Championship, I think we’d already see him competing with the likes of Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the world championships, but I think he’s in the build still. I think he’s in a really good position. I just think that there’s not a single weakness to his game.
The most impressive thing for me is not the chops and the hard-hitting nature. They are great, and I enjoy that. It’s not the technical side of his game. He’s a massive guy, and it’s a lot harder to have the cardio ability in these kind of 25-30 minute matches when you’re a 250-pound-plus guy, versus when some of the guys who are 170-180 pounds. It’s a lot easier because you’re not carrying that weight around. Gunther, I think his cardio ability, more than anything else as a heavyweight really impresses me.”
Doing More For The WWE Intercontinental Championship In One Reign, Than Barrett Did With Five Reigns
Barrett would go on to say that in one reign – Gunther has done more for the WWE Intercontinental Championship than he did with five reigns.
“Let me tell you, I had that championship five times, and the effect I had on the caliber of that championship, I sent it through the basement. So thankfully, prestige from Gunther, and when I tell people now, ‘Yeah, I’m a five-time Intercontinental Champion,’ they’re like, ‘Woah, woah, that Gunther guy, that makes it really special.’ So yeah, thank you, Gunther.”
Simply put: Gunther is the type of timeless talent that could fit into any era of professional wrestling and thrive. You could easily see someone with his skills grappling with Bruno Sammertino, or throwing strikes with The Four Pillars of AJPW. He’s a complete package, and WWE has full knowledge of just how to effectively use him. His potential is limitless as a result.
