In the short time that All Elite Wrestling was the home to CM Punk – he has brought ups and downs for the company. Joining in the fall of 2021- Punk would share the ring with rising names like Darby Allin, Powerhouse Hobbs and MJF.
However, it was once he got a taste of the top prize in the company that issues started to arise. Backstage fights, suspensions, and drama overshadowing major company accomplishments would follow.
However, Punk would finally cross the line this past weekend at AEW All In – nearly derailing the biggest show in the history of the company. After a brief suspension, Punk has now officially been released from his AEW contract.
Tony Khan Made Choice To End CM Punk’s Contract Early
AEW would release the following statement about the termination on Punk’s contract.
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has terminated the wrestler and employment agreements between Phillip Brooks (CM Punk) and AEW with cause, effective immediately. The termination was confirmed today by Tony Khan, CEO, General Manager, and Head of Creative of AEW.
The termination follows a weeklong internal investigation of an incident occurring back stage at AEW – All In London on Sunday, August 27. Following the investigation, the AEW Discipline Committee met and later convened with outside legal counsel before making a unanimous recommendation to Khan that CM Punk be terminated with cause.
Khan offered the following statement:
“Phil played an important role within AEW and I thank him for his contributions. The termination of his AEW contracts with cause was ultimately my decision, and mine alone. Of course, I wish I did not have to share this news, which may come as a disappointment to many of our fans. Nevertheless, I am making the decision in the best interests of the many amazing people who make AEW possible every week – our talent, staff, venue operators, and others whose efforts are unsung but essential to bringing our great shows on television and at arena and stadiums throughout the world.”
The End Of Punk In A Wrestling Ring?
This was something that was bound to happen eventually – and given the incident with Jack Perry would also involve Punk getting into the face of Tony Khan, it makes sense that it comes now.
Punk did bring a lot of eyes to AEW, but his constant backstage drama was something that was taking away from what was truly important.
It’s unclear if the last we will ever see of Punk in a wrestling ring was against Samoa Joe at All In. He’s burnt the bridge with AEW, and had done the same with a messy exit from WWE in 2014.
