In a twist that isn’t surprising, there are reports from PWinsiderelite.com that Impact Wrestling is interested in a working relationship with CM Punk.
Since Punk was fired by AEW, rumors have been running rampant that he wanted to be fired so he could return to the WWE for the previous Royal Rumble and now more have fans hoping he’ll go to the WWE.
Impact Wrestling Reportedly Interested in CM Punk
It’s important to note that nothing official has been said by anyone involved, so this is pure speculation, as is Impact Wrestling’s interest.
While we don’t doubt Impact is interested as they’re always looking for a way to improve and add to their product, we have to keep in mind that it may not work out.
Impact Wrestling has grown considerably over the last few years, but it could be viewed as a big step down by Punk after wrestling in front of 81,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
But Impact is also arguably the best mix of new and old school and several wrestlers went there feeling lost and found themselves rejuvenated.
But would it be a good fit?
Making it work
First, let’s look at what PWInsider had to say, courtesy of Webisjericho.com:
“Among other promotions, we have heard that Impact Wrestling was super excited about the idea of Punk potentially working there but I don’t know that realistically, that would be a long-term option.”
There’s a lot we could read into that, especially the “long-term option” part.
It sounds like the best deal possible could be a short one, which Impact Wrestling has done numerous times, the latest being with Nick Aldis where he challenged for the Impact World Championship.
So it’s possible they could come to some type of arrangement for the short term. If the do, there’s a chance it could become more as has happened with other talents.
Adding a boost
Like with AEW, adding Punk to the company would give Impact Wrestling another bump in fans following the product as happened with Trinity.
Under Scott D’Amore’s leadership, the locker room has become a more positive and uplifting place as he’s worked to change the culture and look after the talent with more creative freedom and discovering what they’re capable of.
Of course, there will always be those waiting for Punk to become the “cancer” he’s been labeled as by some from his time in the WWE and AEW, but we doubt that’d be a problem.
D’Amore is a twenty plus year veteran of the wrestling business and Impact Wrestling has a clear cut structure in place and that may be what’s needed to keep Punk happy.
It would be an interesting experience if he’d return to his roots, so to speak, and Bound For Glory would be the perfect time for him to debut as Will Ospreay will be returning there as well
