Vogue France has come under heavy criticism after they praised Julia Fox for wearing a headscarf.
Vogue France Blasted For Praising Julia Fox’s Head Scarf In Light Of The Country’s Ban On Hijabs-‘This Is A Frustratingly Tone-Deaf Take’
It is no secret that France has banned Muslim women from wearing hijabs in public, despite claims that they are worn for modesty purposes.
And given that Julia Fox had been applauded by the magazine for wearing a headscarf, there was a feeling that there was a contradiction of terms when it came to judging Muslim women and other people.
In the picture here, we can see that Julia is wearing a black head scarf with the same colour shades and jacket.
One user is then quoted as saying the following comments: “This is a frustratingly tone-deaf take that is ignorant to the fact that Muslim women have been banned from wearing their hijabs in work, sports and beyond in France.”
This was immediately picked up on social media. A significant proportion of people began to slam the fashion outlet on the basis that they had been praising somebody and once they were called out, decided to backtrack on it by editing the post.
One person in response wrote: “The audacity of Vogue France to say yes to the headscarf! And then change the IG caption after being called out.
“They’re trying to give us hallucinations.” It is clear that people were outraged, but this anger was directed towards the magazine as opposed to Julia herself.
There was less focus on the fact that she could have been potentially engaging in cultural appropriation, as people simply questioned why Vogue would be promoting such a thing when they knew that it could create backlash amongst the Muslim population.
After all, the magazine does not have a good track record. In 2018, Muslim model Halima Aden who was the first hijabi to appear on the front cover of British Vogue quit the magazine after feeling that the industry was too ‘exploitative.’
It will be fascinating to see whether Vogue France magazine responds to this. But if they refuse to do so, it is still clear that they should avoid doing such a thing in future without considering all the consequences first.
