The 22-year-old managed to hold off some very stiff competition to be crowned the winner of the 8th season.
Although there has been anticipation as to when fans could expect Sawyer to release some music, his sexuality was the last thing that they expected would be making the headlines.
But in order to stay true to himself as an artist, Sawyer felt he had to open up to his fans. In a post to his fans on Instagram, Sawyer shared a picture of himself smiling as he looked into the distance.
The post was captioned by the following comments: “Since I have not publicly said this in a post, I wanted say that I am Bisexual.
“When I was younger I thought I was straight, because I was more attracted to women, and I didn’t know there were more options besides Gay and Straight. So I just assumed I was Straight.”
Sawyer did take a lot of courage in coming out, especially since he is in an industry where image is very important. And this was something that he recognized, as his comments hinted that perhaps not everybody was on board with his revelation.
Thus, in the process of coming out, Sam does expect that there could be some pushback to this. He added: “I’m truly sorry for any of you who have been [discriminated against], and I hope it gets better.
“I’ll probably lose some fans over this post, but that’s fine with me.” The response on social media, however, was mostly in favour of Sawyer.
People praised Sawyer for being honest with his fans and that ultimately may have gone some way to him becoming relatable with the public.
One person wrote: “It is your life Sawyer. Your music and voice is why I am a fan. Your life is yours to live. I hope your post helps others who are battling with their sexuality.”
