We’re on the road to Wrestlemania once again, and WWE are trying to pull out all the stops as they move towards the major show in Texas. Two matches have already been announced, as Brock Lesnar will take on Roman Reigns, and Ronda Rousey will take on Charlotte Flair. However, we’ve now learned that WWE is hoping to get Stone Cold Steve Austin to step into the ring for his first match since 2003.
WWE Have Pitched For Stone Cold To Return To The Ring At Wrestlemania
This news comes first from Fightful Select, who reported that WWE is trying to get Stone Cold to agree towards a match at Wrestlemania later this year. Stone Cold often appears in WWE, generally cutting a promo, hitting a stunner and drinking some beer. However, following his match with The Rock at Wrestlemania 19 – he’s never had an official match since.
While originally injuries were the issue, Stone Cold is more than able to step into the ring for a match – he has just never seen an issue. This has made his retirement one that has actually stuck, when even the likes of Shawn Michaels have caved and returned for one more big money match. WWE has likely made pitches in the past for Stone Cold to return for a match, but they’ve never been able to seal the deal.
Obviously, if they’re able to make a deal – it would be massive. Stone Cold remains one of the most popular professional wrestlers of all time, with him peak in the late 90’s coming during a boom period for WWE. He’s considered one of the main reasons that WWE didn’t lose the Monday Night Wars to WCW. When it comes to a pitched match, that is yet to be known – but a clash with Kevin Owens could be possible, especially with Owens use of the Stunner as a finisher.
