The President has come under heavy praise, as a result of his decision to stay in the country and stand up to Russian aggression.
While that has not stopped the conflict from dampening, there is no denying that it has been a courageous decision that not many leaders would have done. That is why Michael wanted to show his admiration for the leader.
In his acceptance speech for winning best actor, he said: “The only thing I’ll say about things in the world, which I’ve mentioned before, I’m going to say thank you to fellow actor President Zelenskyy, and keep up the fight.”
But it was not just the Ukrainian conflict that Michael decided to comment on. He also used his public platform to highlight the need for greater representation in the form of democratic means.
His particular focus was on voting to ensure that everybody was represented in the electoral process. And at a time where there is significant distrust amongst political leaders, his comments could not have been more appropriate.
He added: “There’s only one way to change things environmentally, socially and for some sort of racial justice and social justice, two words: voting rights. Voting rights and voter suppression.”
Michael’s comments were welcomed on social media. He was praised for taking a political stance, which ultimately will lead to him receiving backlash. After all, it is not possible to satisfy everyone all the time.
One person wrote: “I love you @MichaelKeaton. Really I love you. Michael Keaton ignoring the “shut up and dribble” cynics of this world and supporting Zelensky and his nephew who died from addiction.
“It’s later than you think, might as well say what you have to say out loud.” In reality, the Ukrainian people will need all the support they can get.
And if Michael’s comments help even in the minutest of ways, then he will have achieved what he set out to do. And hopefully, other high-profile stars continue to speak out in a similar manner.
