The Oscars have responded to Will Smith‘s slapping of comedian Chris Rock by stating that they do not accept violence.
The Oscars Respond To Will Smith’s Slapping Of Chris Rock-‘The Academy Does Not Condone Violence Of Any Form’
Will, for his part, lost control as a result of a joke the comedian had made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s lack of hair. The actor’s violent behaviour received mass condemnation across the public, whilst others saw it as a form of entertainment.
But aside from the latter group, it was clear that this behaviour could not be tolerated, especially since millions of people tuned in around the world.
As a result, the Oscars came out to set the record straight over how they felt about it all. In an official statement, a representative said: “The Academy does not condone violence of any form.
“Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
Nevertheless, that statement did not go down very well. This was on the basis that Will had gotten off lightly, and by not coming forward with a strong stance, it ultimately left Chris in a bad way since he was a victim in all of this.
This is especially true, given that Chris had acted impeccably by keeping his calm in a situation where he could have also lost control and responded in kind.
Producer Marshall Herskovitz did not hold back on his condemnation and had this to say: “I call upon the Academy, of which I am a member, to take disciplinary action against Will Smith.
“He disgraced our entire community tonight.” This sentiment was expressed on social media too. People came out in droves in order to demand that Will be held to account for his behaviour. Failure to do so would tarnish the award ceremony.
One person wrote: “Kudos to #ChrisRock for his professional and disciplined response to an appalling display of bad breeding. #WillSmith should surrender that Oscar award as penance!”
So there you have it folks. What did you think about all of this? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
