Justin Bieber proved to be a thorn in Montreal Canadiens fans’ side Tuesday night when he heckled them about his team—the Toronto Maple Leafs—and their performance during a show.
“How About Those Leafs Though, Huh?”: Justin Bieber Riles Up Canadiens Fans During Montreal Show
Even if you’re not a Justin Bieber fan, one thing you should know about the Canadian artist is that he’s a Toronto Maple Leafs fan—a big fan. He’s even made designs for the team’s jerseys in the past.
So, during the March 29 show in the 514, he took the opportunity to take some jabs at his fans in the city. The result was something you’d see at a wrestling event.
Justin Bieber went the “cheap heat” route of praising the city’s rivals and his favorite team. All it took was “How about those Leafs though, huh?” That did not sit well with the fans in attendance and he was met with boos and profanities.
Bieber would go on to say:
“Auston Matthews is really doing some work here in Montreal.”
Matthews—a friend of Bieber—scored a goal against the Canadiens during the Leafs’ Saturday, March 26 losing effort 2-4. Not including the preseason games, the Leafs trail the Canadiens 1-2 games. Further poking the Montreal fans further, he added “How’s that playoff spot looking for you guys this year? Maybe next year, maybe next year.”
Bieber would manage to bounce back from the boos by thanking the Montreal crowd for being at the show before the last song of the set.
Currently, the Leafs—who last made a playoffs appearance and won in 1967—sit at number two in the Atlantic Division and number six in the Eastern Conference with a three-win streak.
Meanwhile, the Canadiens—who the playoffs last season and last won in 1993—are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the Eastern Conference, and the league as a whole. The 23-time Stanley Cup champions are currently dealing with back-to-back loses.
The two teams are slated to square off again next Saturday, April 9.
