Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a virtual appearance at the Grammy awards and encouraged the world to continue speaking out in support of the Ukrainian people.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy Makes An Appearance At The Grammys-‘Fill The Silence With Your Music… Tell Our Story’
The country has been engulfed in a war with Russia that has no signs of slowing down. The conflict has resulted in innocent lives being lost, whilst others have had to flee their homes in order to seek refuge in neighboring countries.
While there has been some support from the international community, the Ukrainian leader was feeling let down by the inadequate response. So much so that he urged the artists in attendance, as well as the public in general, to continue to use their voice in support.
During his speech, he said: “On our land, we are fighting Russia which brings horrible silence with its bombs. The dead silence. Fill the silence with your music. Fill it today. Tell our story.”
The speech was then followed up by a collaboration between John Legend and Ukrainian musicians Siuzanna Iglidan and Mika Newton, as well as Lyuba Yakimchuk who happens to be a poet.
Mika was particularly emotional since her sister is currently in the army and has taken up arms to defend her homeland. Meanwhile, Siuzanna has had to leave her town Odessa behind.
And in order to remember all those that were still struggling, Siuzanna shared the following emotional message: “I got on stage and looked at this huge theater and barely holding my tears, started crying.
“I could not stop my emotions because I’m there in front of all the U.S. showing how beautiful Ukraine culture and music sounds like.”
The reaction on social media was mixed. While people did agree with the words that the President had to say, some were of the view that his speech was not fitting with that of a music ceremony.
One fan wrote: “Get the message and the reason he is giving the speech. But all this still feel so wrong, it’s like turning a wartime president into a entertainer or commercial guy.”
