A 60-year-old man has apparently gotten himself vaccinated against COVID-19 multiple times simply to sell forged vaccination cards in Germany. The aim was to sell off the forgeries to those who didn’t want to get vaccinated but needed the cards as proof that they did.
60-Year-Old Scammer Gets Roughly 90 Shots to Sell Forged COVID-19 Vaccination Cards in Germany
Hailing from Magdeburg, a city in Saxony, Germany, the 60-year-old reportedly got around 90 shots at different vaccination centers in Saxony. Eventually, the police found something fishy about how many shots he was getting in a short period of time and caught up to him on Sunday, April 3.
As a matter of fact, the vaccination scammer was in the process of getting another COVID-19 shot after getting one the day prior. In his possession, he had several blank vaccination cards.
While he wasn’t arrested, the man is currently under investigation for doling out vaccination cards and document forgery, according to the German news agency dpa. Authorities didn’t detail the condition of the scammer after taking 90 shots over a snug period of time from different manufacturers.
Apparently, vaccination document forgery is a pretty rampant crime in Germany as law enforcement there has launched a number of raids in the past. It makes for a lucrative market as anti-vaxxers will pay money to get the vaccination identification so that they can go to public places without being turned around. Last year, Germany rolled out digital vaccination passports for the EU. If forgery continues to be a problem—which is likely the case—digital passports might be the way to go to curb the issue.
Currently, Germany has seen 130,052 deaths from COVID-19 while the number infected has jumped. The country will end mandatory quarantine for people with COVID-19 on Sunday, May 1 and aim to take a voluntary approach.
