It’s been a while since we last heard of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ involvement in music. After turning his music fortunes into other projects, Diddy is returning to his roots in music via a new deal with Motown Records.
Diddy Signs 1-Album Deal with Motown Records
That’s right, Motown Records–known for its myriad of classic acts, classic albums, and a number of short-lived sub-labels. Diddy’s deal is a damn good one which has him tied to the label for one album and will include a label imprint called Love Records.
Oftentimes with sub-labels, they’re purely for the artist and their associated artists to get their projects out. However, projects that don’t cut the main label’s mustard can be rejected and not count towards the contracted albums with the main label.
So, for most artists, if they drop something that Motown Records isn’t picking up, he could release it through Love Records and still be on the line with their Motown deal. Of course, Diddy could have a much more flexible deal if it comes with his own record label.
In a statement, Diddy said:
“Music has always been my first love; Love Records is the next chapter about getting back to the love and making the best music of my life. For the label, I’m focused on creating timeless R&B music with the next generation of artists and producers. Motown is the perfect partner for my album, and I’m excited to add to its legacy.”
His Love Records imprint will focus on R&B and looks to be a long-term project for the legendary producer. It could also result in more projects with Motown Records if the label and this first album under the label pan out for everyone involved. Diddy is scheduled to host—and perform executive producer duties—for this year’s Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 15.
