Bret Hart is Happily Retired, Not Joining AEW Anytime Soon

When news of Bret Hart managing FTR at a Indie event broke, most of us had visions of him managing them in AEW at some point.

That hope was quickly dashed when it was announced he signed a “lucrative contract” with the WWE without the particulars being made public.

It’s recently been reported that his contract is for merchandising purposes, but there could be other aspects as well.

Either way, Bret has stated that he’s happily retired and will go to events that are near and dear to his heart.

    Remembered as a wrestler

Bret is known for his honesty and pride as he worked hard to be the most realistic wrestler in the ring night after night and it was that pride and work ethic that’s made him a legend.

He recently appeared on Lucha Libre Online where he explained his reasons for not wanting to manage or appear in another capacity at the moment.

“Well, I’m happily retired. I’m a home guy now. There’s not a lot I can do in wrestling. People say, ‘What would you do in AEW?’ What would I do? Referee? Manage? Be a Chairman? I don’t want to be remembered that way. I want to be remembered as a wrestler.”

He then talked about having friends in AEW and how he likes he product and will help but only if they come to him. He’s content to stay at home.

“I’d be happy to help a lot of them, and I know a lot of them. I talk to a lot of them, sometimes by text or on the phone and people call me up. I always got advice and I can always pinpoint little things that can make a difference in a guy’s match or something that he’s doing. But I’m a guy that likes being home, so they’re going to have to call me on the phone.

“I wish I could go do stuff more easily, but I’m getting a little older now and it’s getting harder for me to keep flying around and doing stuff, so I got to pick my days that I can do stuff. There’s a lot of things I would love to be part of with AEW and what they’re doing. I know they got some great wrestlers there and I have a lot of respect for the organization and all that, but right now I’m happy at home.”

Bret’s logged a great deal of travel miles over his life, so we can’t blame him for slowing down. This doesn’t rule out us seeing him in AEW as he appeared at Double or Nothing in 2019 and unveiled the AEW World Championship, so anything’s possible.

He’s had a great run and loved watching him compete night after night, but if there’s one rule in professional wrestling it’s never say never.
