Let’s look at some true crime where no one dies as a former Arizona sheriff’s deputy became a cash-stealing wedding crasher. 54-year-old Landon Earl Rankin has been accused of hitting up around eleven weddings and has nabbed thousands in cash gifts. Before becoming a wedding thief, Rankin was a deputy with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office from 1994 until 2015.
Former Arizona Sheriff’s Deputy Turned Wedding Crasher Arrested for Stealing Cash Gifts
Rankin’s M.O was to arrive at weddings as a guest and simply hit up the box for wedding cards. He was captured on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, but that was after a two-wedding hit on April 15 and April 30 pulled in $3,000 to $6,000 cash at each wedding.
It was a surveillance camera that caught the former Arizona sheriff’s deputy stealing a gift box, slipping it into his thieving bag, and skedaddling out of the venue before anyone noticed a thing, according to the Associated Press. He is also a suspect in the theft of gift boxes throughout the East Valley in Pinal and Maricopa County.
Rankin was charged with two counts of 3rd degree burglary but that’s not all. The former deputy was found with meth and fentanyl which adds drug charges to all of this. In an interview with police, Rankin said he showed up at weddings because he was going through a divorce and wanted to hear vows–which is just sad.
However, it doesn’t explain why he’s stealing gift boxes from happy couples unless “I do” triggers him to do so. What do you think of this odd case? Was there a deep motivation for Rankin’s theft or was it simply tied to his drug possession? Let us know down below.
