Baltimore Orioles’ Matt Harvey Suspended for 60 Games Following Tyler Skaggs Trial Admissions
His ban comes as a result of him participating “in the distribution of a prohibited Drug of Abuse” which would be oxycodone in Harvey’s case. This obviously constitutes a violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program which includes oxy:
“The following substances and their analogs are covered by the Program as Drugs of Abuse, their Schedule classification notwithstanding: 1. Natural Cannabinoids (e.g., THC, Hashish and Marijuana) 2. Synthetic THC and Cannabimimetics (e.g., K2 and Spice) 3. Cocaine 4. LSD 5. Opiates (e.g., Oxycodone, Heroin, Codeine, and Morphine) 6. Methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) 7. Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) 8. “Bath Salts” (i.e., Cathinone and Synthetic Cathinones) 9. GHB 10. Phencyclidine (PCP)”
In his admission, Matt Harvey said that he gave Tyler Skaggs Percocets while they were with the Los Angeles Angels. Harvey signed on with the Angels in December 2018 but was gone by late July 2019. The 27-year-old Skaggs died of asphyxia while under the influence of oxycodone, fentanyl, and alcohol earlier that month.
Harvey also admitted to using cocaine and taking painkillers while in the dugout and in the clubhouse. Baltimore Orioles GM Mike Elias weighed in on the suspension:
“We support all aspects of MLB’s joint drug prevention and treatment program and their ruling in this particular case. I am glad that Matt now has the opportunity to put this part of his past behind him and pursue another shot with our organization after serving his suspension.”
