Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece the Mona Lisa is a revered artifact in art, culture, and history. It’s the kind of thing Indiana Jones would risk snakes, spike traps, boulders, and black market traffickers to retrieve.
Climate Change Vandal Throws Cake at the Mona Lisa – Tells People to “Think of the Earth”
Well, one man decided that the Mona Lisa would be the perfect medium to bring attention to his message about Earth—by smearing cake on the masterpiece. The man was in Paris’ Louvre Museum disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair because like the Spanish Inquisition, no one expects a little old lady in a wheelchair.
Suddenly, he sprang up from the wheelchair shouted at the visitors to think of planet Earth and threw cake at the painting. This guy didn’t throw poundcake at the Mona Lisa either, this was something with icing or frosting, so everyone would see a defaced piece. He would also throw roses which is less egregious if not annoying to clean up.
As he was escorted out, he yelled to spectators:
“Think of the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you, think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”
Security would bundle the vandal out of the museum posthaste while staff cleaned the bulletproof glass that protects the painting. The man would be placed on psychiatric hold following the incident. What do you think of this incident? Did he go too far in vandalizing such a valuable and important piece of art? Should he have found another way to bring awareness to climate change?
