Monkeypox is growing in the U.S and now health officials have found the first cases of person-to-person contact cases. Several states have popped up with cases including Washington, California, Utah, Colorado, Virginia, Massachusetts, and of course, Florida.
U.S Health Officials Have Discovered First Cases of Monkeypox via Person-to-Person Contact
Currently, the infection cases in the U.S are among 14 people. This brings us to 24 countries that are seeing bumps in reported cases with roughly 250 cases worldwide. As a result, the World Health Organization has raised monkeypox to a moderate threat.
However, there are no expectations of a full-blown pandemic in the sense of COVID-19. Also, the death rate is still minimal at the moment and isn’t expected to spike.
The first U.S case of monkeypox came after a Massachusetts native turned up positive for the disease after returning from Canada on May 17, 2022. Normally, the disease transmits from an infected animal to a human via a bite or scratch. Also, handling bushmeat can transmit monkeypox to humans.
As with any transmittable disease, it’s strongly recommended that you be aware of the symptoms and self-quarantine if you believe you or someone you know is showing said symptoms. Also, contact your local health department for treatment.
According to the World Health Organization:
“The incubation period of monkeypox can range from 5 to 21 days. The febrile stage of illness usually lasts 1 to 3 days with symptoms including fever, intense headache, lymphadenopathy (swelling of the lymph nodes), back pain, myalgia (muscle ache), and an intense asthenia (lack of energy). The febrile stage is followed by the skin eruption stage, lasting for 2 to 4 weeks. Lesions evolve from macules (lesions with a flat base) to papules (raised firm painful lesions) to vesicles (filled with clear fluid) to pustules (filled with pus), followed by scabs or crusts.”
